Mumbai is unique. In 1991, its population was 9,925,000. Eight years down the line, it has gone up to 1.5 crore. Such a big city needs good quality and quantity of water. This is being taken care of by the authorities as water that comes either from the Tansa or Vaitarna and Tulsi lakes gets 100 per cent purification treatment before it reaches us.

Efficient conveyance is the second important amenity. The citizen is entitled to good roads and the government and the BMC are doing their best in planning and developing these.

Last, but not the least, is the problem of garbage. The Solid Waste Management Department of the BMC faces a mammoth task in this area. Though people complain about the filth surrounding them, it is their non-cooperation that actually results in all the garbage strewn around. The BMC has provided bins and stationery compactors all over the city and even door-to-door service in some areas to take care of the problem. But people prefer throwing garbage around the bin and not inside it.Instead of making full use of the facility, they will stand far away and aim at the bin. If the garbage is inside the bin, the entire area looks clean and even a dog finds it difficult to drag out the dirt. Mumbaikars need to take up Advanced Locality Managements ALM seriously. This entire process begins with separation of dry and wet garbage at home and takes only a little initiative on our part. Our AMCs, DMCs and chief engineers make it a point to make surprise checks every morning to ensure that officials are doing their job.

But if you do not cooperate and do your bit in solving the problem, all the efforts will be of no use. It is imperative that we develop a sense of responsibility and the feeling of belongingness to the city.
