Woman kills self over dowry demands

A 22-year-old woman committed suicide by consuming poison at Ghatkopar west on Saturday morning. The victim, Hemlata Bhanushali, was allegedly driven to death by incessant demands for dowry, said the Ghatkopar police. Bhanushali consumed poison at her residence near Janglee Mahadev Temple at Asalpha Village. She was rushed to Rajawadi hospital but was declared dead after admission.

According to the police, Hemlata began to be harassed soon after she got married to Rajesh Bhanushali on March 27 this year. Her in-laws would harass her for money and gifts from her parents, they added. Hemlata8217;s father-in-law Banji 52, mother-in-law Purbai and brother-in-law Mitesh have been arrested.

Security cover for ballot boxes

The state electoral office and police have made 8220;all arrangements for the security of ballot boxes,8221; State Chief Electoral Officer Dr D K Sankaran said on Saturday night. The ballot boxes are being stored under tight security at 48 counting centres set up throughout the state till October 6, when counting begins. Polling in the state to 48 Lok Sabha and 288 assembly seats were held in two phases on September 5 and 11.
