Industrial blast claims 5 workers

  • At least five workers were killed when a reactor exploded in the Nuntech company at the Boisar industrial estate on Wednesday afternoon.The explosion, which occurred at 12.30 pm, caused the ceiling to collapse, burying nearly 20 workers who were present at the site. Twelve of these were rescued and admitted to hospital, of whom five succumbed. At least eight workers are still trapped under the debris, added the police.
  • While the cause of the explosion has not been identified, the police said it was so massive its impact was felt in the neighbouring industrial units.

    Among the dead four have been identified as E S Mohite, Indersingh Veerbahadur Singh, Harshad Bhikubai Vashi and Niranjan Pal.

    Relief operations were on under the supervision of District Collector Shrikant Singh and DSP Kamte.

    New aquarium at Taraporewala

  • Minister of Fisheries, Narayan Rane, announced that a modern, hi-tech aquarium will be built in the place of TaraporewalaAquarium at Marine Drive.
  • In a reply to a query by Kirit Somaiyya, Mangalprabhat Lodha and Mohan Raichura, during the question hour in the Legislative Assembly, the minister said the aquarium will be jointly built by Alliance Technology Development, a Singapore-based company, and the Maharashtra Fisheries Development Corporation. The project costs, a whopping Rs 134 crore, will be borne entirely by ATD, Rane said.
