One person was injured when two unidentified men fired at him near Girgaum junction on Sunday afternoon.
According to police, Mohammed Rafiq Shaikh was shot at by two men at 12:30 pm opposite Aram Guest House at Girgaum Chowpatty. Shaikh received a bullet in his arm and was rushed to BYL Nair Hospital at Mumbai Central, where he is reportedly out of danger. The assailants escaped on foot.
Additional commissioner of police, south region, Arup Patnaik visited Shaikh at Nair Hospital and questioned him about the incident. Shaikh told him the assailants had beaten him up before firing. Patnaik said police are looking into Shaikh8217;s antecedents.
Deputy commissioner of police, zone-II, K Venkatesham also said it is difficult to pinpoint the motive behind the incident.
Shaikh, who has spent a decade in Kuwait, now deals in second-hand cars in Mumbai. Police believe the firing could be fallout of business rivalry as competition among second-hand car dealers is gettingmore intense by the day. However, the crime branch is examining the case from another angle. As Rafiq8217;s brother Mohammed Hanif, a serial blast accused, was also present at the time of the incident, police suspect the target could have been Hanif.
