Sheikh, a veteran of eight years in the world of crime, had been involved in the sensational escape of Feroze Kokani during which he shot dead a police constable Balchandra Kardille. He had been previously charged with six murder cases in Mumbai.

Manchekar man shot

Barely 24 hours after the killing of two Chhota Shakeel gangsters at Andheri on Thursday evening, the crime branch today gunned down a member of the Suresh Manchekar gang at Ghatkopar in the north-eastern suburbs. Jayant Rathod, a top aide of Manchekar, was killed at Sainik Garden, Garodia Nagar, Ghatkopar where he had come to bump off a businessman, police claimed. His associate, however, managed to escape. Two policemen 8211; head constable Dattatreya Adsul and head constable Vishnu Pawaskar 8211; were alsoinjured in the exchange of fire. The police have recovered a brake-frame .38 revolver, six empty cartridges and a mobile phone from Rathod.

BMC engineer assaulted

A BMC sub-engineer was today beaten up by a Shiv Sena shakha pramukh and his associates in his cabin at Kurla L8217; ward office. Angry municipal employees went on a flash strike following this incident, though normalcy was restored in the ward office in a few hours. Shafi Badruddin Momin was sitting in his Building Departments cabin at around 9.40 am when Sena shakha pramukh of ward no 171, Ashok Shivtare, and his associates barged in and questioned him why BMC had not demolished a structure on Andheri-Kurla road. A heated exchange ensued and as tempers rose, Shivtare and his men pounced upon Momin. Momin was treated at Bhabha Hospital for minor injuries and he later filed an FIR at Kurla police station.
