UMC demolishes illegal complex

After repeated complaints from residents and corporators, the Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation UMC today undertook the demolition of Shivam complex in camp no 2,Ulhasnagar.

Sources said the action came after urban development secretary Nand Lal sent a note to deputy commissioner V N Joglekar who8217;s holding charge as acting commissioner on June 20, asking that the demolition be carried out without any delay.

During the tenure of S H Shool as commissioner, repeated complaints by residents and corporators had fallen on deaf ears, fuelling speculation that the Rs 3.5 crore structure built in April 1997 had the commissioner8217;s blessings. Nand Lal had been sent by Chief Minister Manohar Joshi to UMC after he received complaints about the illegal complex on April 11, 1998. An ultimatum of April 15 was given for the demolition.

But though directed, Shool didn8217;t make any move, and got a punishment transfer.

Deputy commissioner in-charge of encroachments, Yashwant Gangurde, led a team to demolish the structure at 1:30 pm. The operation continued till 5:00 pm, and is expected to go on tomorrow too. 8220;While all the walls have been demolished, the process of pulling downthe pillars will begin tomorrow,8221; Gangurde informed.

Interestingly, one of the promoters tried to use his ingenuity to stall the demolition by organising an 8220;akhand path8221; of the Granth Saheb from 12:00 pm.

But when a few lady constables entered the puja room asking for the name of the organiser of the path,8217; everybody fled. The complex had been built by ten partners.
