Multipurpose I-cards for police martyr families: J-K

Coming to the aid of hundreds of families of policemen who died fighting militancy in the state, the J&K Police have decided to register them by issuing multipurpose identity cards to them. The identity cards will give families of the deceased police officials easier access to state government officials and will also help them secure concessions in various government services.

Recently, DGP Gopal Sharma, summoned a Police Department meeting to discuss the welfare of families of policemen who lost their lives fighting militancy. It was decided in the meeting that around 900 such families in the state would be issued multipurpose identity cards, said authorities.

Officials said that the decision was taken after deputy superintendent’s of the District Armed Reserve (DAR) of several districts—who are also nodal officers for supervision of rehabilitation of police martyr families—reported that these families did not have proper access to state officials. The matter was also brought to the notice of the DGP here recently by the families at a function organised by the Police Department in Jammu.

This is the first time that the families will receive these cards, which will bear the names and photographs of the family members. Any member of the family will be able to use the card, say officials.

The government also considers providing them free ration and concessions in bus fares. Card holders will also receive to free medicines from police hospitals. Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Welfare, J-K Police, Aftab Kakroo, said: “The decision to issue the multi-purpose identity cards to families of police martyrs has been taken recently and the cards will be issued soon.”
