Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav could not have asked for more. As if the Congress has not given him enough trouble already, Mulayam has come under criticism from the RLD, his coalition partner, and even the Left parties.
While the RLD has demanded the payment of pending dues to sugarcane growers in western parts of the state, the CPI and the Congress have come down heavily against the government on the deteriorating law and order situation in the state as well as the erratic power and water supply.
Sources said that RLD president Ajit Singh has met Mulayam twice on the issue of sugarcane growers, following which the State Information Department released a communique, claiming that 90 per cent of the dues had been cleared while efforts were being made to clear the rest.
‘‘Ajit Singh has already expressed dissatisfaction on the functioning of the Mulayam government twice. He (Mulayam) is not following the coalition dharma and never takes his allies into confidence before taking a major decision,’’ said PCC chief Jagdambika Pal.
‘‘It is not right that the state should compare its poor law and order situation to that of other states and escape blame. I have been here in Lucknow since Saturday and have seen six power cuts. Who should be blamed for it? When this is the situation in the state capital, you can imagine what it must be like in the districts,’’ said A.B. Bardhan, CPI secretary-general, on Sunday.
The CPI has decided to launch an agitation to protest the poor law and order condition in the state and to raise the issue of poor power and water supply. The Congress has decided to observe a week-long agitation against the Mulayam government from July 13 to 19.
