VADODARA, Aug 2: The M S University8217;s syndicate has rejected the recommendations of the committee which was formed to lay down the rules to be followed in cases of sexual harassment on the campus.

Speaking on the matter, syndicate member Ghanshyam Dalal said, 8220;The members have concluded that the report is totally biased and prejudiced.8221; Dalal added that the syndicate has concluded that the report has targeted only the teaching faculty and spared the girl student. The syndicate has now appointed a seven-member-committee to look into the recommendations and make the necessary changes.

The convener of this committee would be Surekha Devy. The others in the committee are Rajeshwari Trivedi, Maya Shah, Aruna Khasgiwala, Pratima Desai, the president of Baroda University Teachers Association and the President of Baroda University Staff Association.

Among other decisions, the syndicate has accepted the report on changes to be implemented in student union elections. A student will be allowed to contest only for seven years, regardless of whether elections are held every year or not.

The syndicate has decided to appoint one Faculty representative for every 1,500 students and nominate four faculty representatives from the university.

The members of the syndicate have also decided to allow J N Mahant, a temporary lecturer in the Sculpture department at the Faculty of Fine Arts, to continue in his job for a year. He will be appointed on a permanent basis at the end of this period.

Mahant, who had moved court about his temporary status, will have his performance reviewed by a three-member committee comprising of Jayashree Mehta, Harivadhan Parikh and Ajay Joshi.

The members have also passed the proposal to charge Rs 6,000 per day for the General Education auditorium. The charges have, however, been fixed at Rs 3,500 for students and faculty members.
