It8217;s assessment time for BJP MLAs in Rajasthan. Come April and state BJP legislators will be expected to submit a progress report of the work undertaken by them in their respective constituencies to Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje. Party leaders in the state will evaluate their performance on the basis of these reports in a monthly meeting.

At a recent party meeting, the Chief Minister had informed the legislators that they would be expected to present a monthly report on the work done in their constituencies. The monthly report cards and review of the reports presented by the MLAs will ensure that they are made accountable and work in a responsible manner, said a senior party leader. Of the 200 MLAs in the state Assembly, 122 belong to the BJP.

8220;This will also enable party leaders to keep a record of how much work of what has been assigned to an MLA for his constituency is actually being completed,8221; the leader said. He added that this performance audit would also be extended to ministers.

The party also plans on holding a special meeting every month to review these reports. The performance and rating during these meetings will play a vital role during selection of candidates for the next Assembly elections, in 2008. It is believed that the decision has been taken keeping in mind the 2008 Assembly elections.

The performance of the legislators will be evaluated on the basis of the quality and quantity of time spent by an MLA in his constituency, the development projects undertaken and the people8217;s opinion of the MLA.

According to party sources, these monthly audits will play an important role in selection of candidates for the next elections. 8220;This is like a subtle warning to the legislators. Start performing or you might just have to wash your hands off the ticket,8221; said a senior party leader.

Senior party members also believe that Raje will also manage to repress the voices of rebel MLAs. 8220;This will be a lesson to those MLAs who do not do anything themselves, but are always ready to target the government,8221; said a senior MLA from the Raje camp.
