It may have been a month since the serial blasts rocked Delhi, and the city may have moved on, but it seems that things will never be the same for municipal dustbins in the New Delhi area.
Newsline found that dustbins near the Supreme Court, the Mandi House Metro Station and India Gate continue to remain upturned despite the garbage strewn around them.
After bombs were planted in dustbins at Connaught Place, Barakhamba Road and Greater Kailash during the serial blasts, these dustbins were upturned to avert any threat of further blasts.
But a month on, they continue to remain unused. When asked, officials at the New Delhi Municipal Council NDMC passed the buck on to the Delhi Police. 8220;We have not issued any specific orders to the sweeping staff or ragpickers for keeping them upturned. It8217;s the Delhi Police. We set them upright every morning but beat officers upturn them again,8221; Dr P K Sharma, NDMC Medical Health Officer, said.
8216;We have already written to the DCP of the area but the police continue to upturn them everyday,8221; he said. Area DCP Anand Mohan was not available for comment.
In the aftermath of the blasts, the NDMC has already decided to issue identity cards to ragpickers, part of the door-to-door collection project of the municipal council. It will be hiring Ramky Enviro Engineers Ltd, which is already in charge of garbage collection in residential and commercial pockets in the New Delhi area, to lift garbage from government offices and VIP bungalows.
