A milkman from a Mohali village returned Rs 3 lakh to its owner in Mohali on Wednesday.

Manpreet Singh of Kartarpur village near Mullanpur saw an abandoned bag lying on a roadside in Sector 71. Upon opening the bag, he found three bundles of the Indian currency in the denomination of 1,000,8221; Mataur Station House Officer SHO Devinder Singh told Newsline.

He then rushed to the residents of the adjoining houses who accompanied Manpreet to the police station.

8220;When we counted the currency, it turned out to be

Rs 3 lakh,8221; said the SHO, while informing that some key rings and other identity proofs of the owner were also found from the bag.

8220;On the basis of recovered identity proof, Ranjeet Singh of Sector 71 in Mohali was summoned to police station. After his thorough cross examination, he turned out to be the genuine owner. So the bag was handed over to him,8221; said the police officer.

Ranjeet told the police that he had placed the bag with currency notes atop his car. He forgot to put it inside the car and drove away.

Ranjeet offered an honorarium of Rs 2,000 to Manpreet, who accepted only Rs 1,000 as compensation for loss of milk.

8220;It is a rare case that deserves great applause,8221; said the SHO, while adding that a daily dairy report had been lodged in this regard.
