Union Finance Minister Chidambaram accused Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi of pursuing a 8216;divisive, sectarian, narrow, partisan and communal agenda8217; during latter8217;s campaigning for the second phase of Gujarat elections.
8220;Instead of uniting the people of Gujarat, sending a message of reassurance to all and speaking for the people
of the state, Narendra Modi has pursued a divisive, sectarian, narrow, partisan and communal agenda,8221; he said.
8220;Unfortunately the BJP has turned all norms of democracy, generated heat and controversy, incited communal passions,8221; said Chidambaram while talking about BJP8217;s campaigning for the second phase of Gujarat elections to be held on December 16.
8220;I am deeply concerned about this trend. Elections must be fought on issues, policies, programmes and performance,8221; he said.
8220;Modi boasts about Gujarat8217;s growth. Even that is questionable,8221; he added.
Talking about Gujarat8217;s growth during the past six years of Modi-regime, Chidambaram said, 8220;What has happened in Gujarat is not inclusive growth8221;.
8220;Growth is necessary, but inclusive growth is important,8221; Chidambaram said.
8220;The growth in Gujarat has kept our large sections of people, alienated and instilled fear in them,8221; Chidambaram observed while stating that the UPA government has implemented schemes like National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, Sarav Shiksha Abhiyan, extension of mid-day meal scheme, Aam Aadmi Bima Yojana among others for achieving inclusive growth.
8220;We see that the society in Gujarat is a divided lot,8221; he said adding that these divisions were visible in the on-going electoral battle in Gujarat.
8220;That is not good for Gujarat nor for India. On this one ground this Modi government deserves to go and a new government needs to be elected in its place,8221; Chidambaram said.
