
The Fire and Emergency Services Committee of the Municipal Corporation organised a mock drill at the Reserve Bank of India RBI, Sector 17, on Tuesday.
The members of the committee made a call to the police control room about a terrorist attack and fire in the RBI building. Within minutes the area was swarmed with police personnel, ITBP personnel and a bomb disposal squad. Firefighters and ambulances were also pressed into service. The area around the building was sealed and an alarm was sounded following which people were evacuated.
The commandos took positions around the building while firefighters doused the flames blazing on the top floor.
The one-and-a-half-hour-long drill was attended by MC Additional Commissioner P K Sharma, councillors Harjinder Kaur, Gurcharan Dass Kalaa and Assistant Superintendent of Police Madhur Verma among other officials.
Chairman of the fire committee M P S Chawla said: 8220;A drill of this nature was conducted for the first time in the city. We wanted to test the preparedness of the various forces in tackling a situation similar to the Mumbai terror attacks.8221;
ASP Madhur Verma said, 8220;Quick reaction teams reached the spot as soon as we got a call. Commandos were deployed. We diverted traffic on the route. The teams were ready for any situation.8221;
A similar drill had earlier been conducted by the committee in Centra Mall, Industrial Area.
