Mob beats up cops over alleged molestation

The youth, identified as Avtar Singh, 27, surrendered to the police this evening. By then, the police had also rounded up his father and father-in-law, both of whom are listed as bad characters in Jahangirpuri.

On Monday, Avtar had reportedly molested a 12-year-old in the area. Yesterday, around 9 p.m. the residents claim, he lured a 14-year-old boy inside a public toilet, sodomised him and fled. The boy narrated his ordeal to his parents and reportedly named Avtar as the assailant.

The residents of DB block then marched towards the police station and started pelting stones at the building. They claimed police negligence had helped Avtar 8211; who lives in an adjoining block escape even on Monday, when he had molested a girl.

A constable sustained head injuries in the stone-pelting on his head. The mob did not stop here: They spotted a police motorcycle parked outside Jahangirpuri Police Station and set it afire. When some policemen tried to intervene, they were beaten up.

While the police have registered a case against Avtar, they have also registered a case of rioting against the residents.
