Outgiong Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav got a taste of things to come when he summoned a meeting of all party legislators here today. Only 30 MLAs managed to reach the party office where the meeting was to be held, and included a few of those who lost their seats in the just-concluded elections.
When it became obvious yesterday that his party was being routed, Mulayam submitted his resignation to the Governor and then announced a legislature party meeting for today. In stark contrast to the time when he organised public meetings of mammoth proportions on two days8217; notice, Mulayam failed to get all his MLAs to the state capital today.
In what finally turned out to be an informal introduction session, Mulayam welcomed the new incumbents in the party. After a few rounds of hand shakes and feet touching, Mulayam asked the present MLAs to thank the voters in their respective constituencies for helping them win. He also asked them to concentrate on their areas from day one.
Mulayam was obviously not happy with those who lost, but he tried to understand the electoral equations in their constituencies. He also had some advice for his losing legislators. He asked them to go back to their constituencies to explore the reasons for their defeat and also work to improve the situation in their favour. Party office bearers said the legislature party meeting would now take place tomorrow.
All 28 Cabinet ministers and 25 ministers for state in the Mulayam government, along with chairpersons of all 32 corporations and councils including Amar Singh of UP Development Council, submitted their resignations to the SP chief, who will now forward them to the Governor.
