The differently-abled students of Bhavnagar University are still not aware of the fact that they require just 20 per cent marks in their final examination to pass it as against the normal 36 per cent.
This came to light on Saturday when some members of the National Students Union of India NSUI went to the Vice-Chancellor and sought to know the number of students covered under this new system.
8220;The Academic Council of the university had, in the January this year, passed a resolution that the physically challenged students can pass their final examinations by scoring 20 per cent marks,8221; said Kishor Kantariya, general secretary of NSUI8217;s Bhavnagar unit.
According to Kantariya, it was mandatory for the university to inform the physically challenged students about this during the admission process for the 2008-09 session. 8220;But they failed to inform the students,8221; he added.Passing the buck to the university registrar, Vice-Chancellor H C Trivedi said: 8220;When this decision was taken, there was a registrar on special duty. But he left before the admission procedure commenced, and a new one was appointed. There was a miscommunication.8221;
What has complicated the issue further is that the differently-abled students are required to fill up a form in this regard.
Kantariya said, 8220;Forms for the final examination have been submitted and the university is still not sure as to what steps they would take to correct their mistake.8221;
8220;It will be not easy for us to reverse the process, but we will try our best,8221; Trivedi said.
