MUMBAI, MARCH 11: MiG Cricket Club, Bandra recorded their maiden triumph in the Purshottam Shield cricket tournament defeating Shivaji Park Gymkhana by virtue of their first innings lead of 89 on the third and last day at the PJ Hindu Gymkhana ground, here today. The winners got a cash prize of Rs 20,000 while the runners-up received Rs 10,000.

Resuming at 163 for six, Shivaji Park needed another 160 to overtake MiG’s total of 323 which included 10 penalty runs for a slow overrate. But the former were bowled out for 234. At this stage both captains decided that there was no point in continuing the match and settled for a draw 40 minutes before lunch.

Southpaw Manoj Joglekar remained unbeaten on 74 (253b, 7×4, 1×6) while medium pacer Abey Kuruvilla finished with figures of six for 90.

MiG centurion Sandesh Joglekar won the PV Hazrat Man of the Match trophy while Shreyas Khanolkar of Shivaji Park bagged the Dongre Shield for Best Fielder.

Chetna win thriller

Chetna College, Bandra scored a thrilling one-wicket win over Somaiya in the first round of the Welingkar Institute of Management conducted Impact 99 the Inter-Management College Cricket Tournament at the Matunga Gymkhana today.

Batting first Chetna set Somaiya a target of 205 for the loss of nine wickets in the stipulated 30 overs thanks to a 85-run knock by Sharad.

Rishi (65) and Kartik’s (45) innings, however, went in vain as Somaiya fell one run short. Kshitij did much of the damage for the winners with a four wicket haul.

Omar edges Bam

Down by seven points Mumbai’s Omar Balsara made an unfinished break of 20 to score a 61-47 win over BP Bam in the first round of the ATM Shipping AR Dias Open Break Billiards Tournament at the Catholic Gymkhana today.

Zakir nets brace

A strike in each-half by Zakir Ali helped Republicans B to a 3-0 win against Reserve Bank of India in the Punjab National Bank sponsored First Division BHA league hockey match at the Khalsa College Ground, Matunga today.

After repeated raids on the RBI post failed to yield results thanks to custodian Francis Cabral, Zakir finally succeeded in putting Republicans ahead in the 34th min.

After the break Republicans led by ace-striker Juned Jada continued their raids before Zakir struck again in the 51st minute. After a dozen corner attempts, Dalbinder Singh finally converted for the winners in the 58th minute to pit the match beyond RBI.

Vasantdada advance

A chance strike by striker Russell Braganza, late in the second half saw Vasantdada Patil edge out Saboo Siddique to book their final berth in the Inter-Engineering College Football Tournament at the St Xavier’s Ground, Parel today.

The match winner came 35 minutes after the breather when a corner taken by Jayesh Dave was blocked by Saboo custodian Dhareshwar Sujit. The ball ricochetted to Braganza who made no mistake in finding the net.

Vasantdada now face VESIT in the summit clash after the latter beat RAIT 5-3 via the tie-breaker in the other semi-final. Both team were tied at 2-all after regulation time.

It was RAIT who took the early lead (3rd minute) when a pass by Roshan John was neatly tapped in by Lucas Natraj. Manish Solanki took advantage of a defensive lapse by the rival custodian to punch in the equaliser 13 minutes later.

VESIT went into the lead for the first time when Solanki struck again in the 36th minute. The goal came off a good move by Jeetu Krishnan who passed the ball to Pradeep Gangawne. The latter pushed the ball further to an unmarked Solanki standing next to the post.

Gaurav Chitnis netted RAIT’s second goal to take the match into the tie-breaker where only Roshan John hit the target. Jimmy Thomas, Solanki and Siddharth Rastogi swelled the winner’s tally.

Semis stage set

Indian Railways, Sunil Machhar, CV Rao and Well Knit completed the semi-final line-up of the selection trials to select the Indian bridge team for the Bridge Federation of India and Middle East Championships.

At the Central Railway auditorium today, Railways– comprising SK Bhattacharya, AK Das, S Roy, M Mukherjee and R Roy, finished the eight team league of 84 boards with 277 vps, followed by Sunil Machhar with 274.50 points. National champions CV Rao were placed third with 257.25 vps. Well Knit with victories in the last two rounds garnered 255.50 points to leap frog into the fourth place.

In the first semi-final, Railways face Well Knit with the winner to be decided over 96 boards.

Ladies team

The selection trial for the Indian ladies team begins at the same venue from March 13. Entry fees is Rs 1500 per pair in the elimination rounds and a similar amount for those who qualify for the final.
