
MUMBAI, AUG 11: Political candidates from Mumbai8217;s constituencies will face the heat much before the elections actually begin. August 16 onwards, Action for Good Governance and Networking in India AGNI will organise a Meet your candidates8217; programme for 24-odd Vidhan Sabha constituencies in the city.
8220;A MLA gets Rs 65 lakh to develop his constituency and the voter has every right to know how he is going to spend it,8221; says Sheilu Srinivasan, AGNI steering committee member. 8220;The voter is also not sure about the credentials of the candidate he is going to vote for. This meet will give him a chance to clear his doubts.8221;
The first meet will be held at the Jaihind College on August 16 and will last 90 minutes. 8220;Prakash Buvat from the Shiv Sena and Ashok Datrak from the NCP have agreed to attend. The Congress candidate has still not been finalised. The senior panel will comprise former city Police Commissioner Satish Sahney and local newspaper editors. The local constituency panel will consist of ahousewife, a professional and a member of the youth,8221; says Srinivasan. A similar pattern will be followed for the rest of the meetings scheduled to continue till the end of the election campaign.
Only candidates from the three leading political alliances 8212; National Democratic Alliance BJP, Congress, and Third Front NCP and allies 8212; will be invited.
The audience will write their queries on a slip which will be forwarded in an interview format by a moderator so as to enable the candidates to communicate effectively. All 8220;silly and mischievous questions8221; will be discouraged, she said.
To ensure discipline, AGNI will restrict most of the meetings to a representative citizens8217; formation of about 250 people, spanning a cross-section of society.
