PORT-OF-SPAIN, MARCH 7: Australian fast bowler Glenn McGrath needed only six deliveries to complete a shattering West Indies collapse in the first Test at Queens Park Oval today.

McGrath bowled fellow paceman Mervyn Dillon for nought witt the last ball of the first over of the third morning to end West Indies first innings for 167.Australia, leading by 102, were 43 for one at lunch after their second innings had been interrupted briefly by a shower shortly before the interval.

McGrath’s swift dismissal of Dillon after West Indies resumed at their overnight 167 for nine meant they had lost their last seven wickets for 18 runs. McGrath finished with five for 50, leg-spinner Stuart MacGill (3-41) being the only other wicket-taker in an innings including two run outs.

West Indies struck back quickly when Australia batted again, Courtney Walsh removing Matthew Elliott (0) with the total seven in the fifth over.

However, Michael Slater (17 batting) and Justin Langer (24 batting) were repairing the earlydamage in a second wicket stand that had produced 36 by the interval.

Earlier, on Saturday, the West Indies were revived by a counter-attacking third-wicket stand of 88 between captain Brian Lara (62) and Test debutante Dave Joseph (50).

Joseph was forthright in his strokeplay and completed his half century with two of his four boundaries in one over from leg-spinner Shane Warne. But McGrath returned to break the blossoming partnership, trapping Joseph leg before as he drove at a big inswinger. The 29-year-old Antiguan faced 108 balls and batted 148 minutes.
