PUNE, MAY 30: For those who think that the ongoing NATO strike in Yugoslavia is just an example of American hegemony, the members of 120 nations who participated at the recently concluded The Hague Appeal For Peace Conference8217; have one more example to narrate.
Noted environmentalist and director of International Institute for Sustainable Future Rashmi Mayur who was among the key speakers of the conference has described the whole event as a fruitless exercise controlled by US8217;.
Mayur, along with 700 other delegates comprising social workers, environmentalists, experts, scientists and government representatives rejected the official charter and presented a parallel declaration at the end of the conference.
The official declaration did not ask for a rule of law to be implemented by a world institution. This means that the whole declaration was controlled by US,8221; said Mayur, who is in Pune to deliver an address on A New World Order And The Future Of Humanity8217; at a seminar on An Appeal For Peace 8211; Hague Agenda- Role For India8217; at Maharasthra Institute of Technology 8211; World Peace Centre.
8220;We wanted to denounce the NATO bombings in Yugoslavia, but this point was omitted from the declaration at the instance of US,8221; he said describing the NATO action as a individual decision by 19 nations to destroy the sovereignty of a nation in gross violation of the United Nations guidelines.
Mayur also suggested to end the UN Security Council. 8220;It is an anomaly in the world and empowers the five superpowers to determine the future of the world,8221; Mayur said.
The parallal charter prepared by Mayur and signed by delegates from Russia, Japan and nations mainly from African continent and South America calls for disarmament of all nuclear weapons from the globe by 2005 and total disarmament as such by the year 2010.
8220;We the 700 delegates were emphasising on the point of rule of law in the world and that all the countries and people should be treated equally. The parallel declaration was prepared to challenge the hegemony of US,8221; added Mayur. 8220;I also mooted the idea of dividing the 185 member nations of the UN into eco-regions. UN funds should be released to these nations on the basis of their ecological and economic conditions,8221; he added.
