BSP chief Mayawati said she needed two days to react to CM Mulayam Singh Yadav’s decision to bear the cost of Kanshi Ram’s treatment.
‘‘Wait for two days and I will come out with a suitable answer,’’ said Mayawati. If she welcomes the decision, she would be playing into Mulayam’s hands and if she declines it, her vote bank may not like it. ‘‘The fact is Kanshi Ramji is suffering from paralysis which has affected half his body and that cannot be cured,’’ BSP spokesman Vijay Goel told The Indian Express.
Patry insiders say Mayawati is forming a strategy to counter the joint onslaught by Mulayam and Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan to confuse the BSP cadre.
Paswan has already inducted Phool Singh Bariyya, the expelled BSP chief of Madhya Pradesh into his Lok Janashakti Party (LJP) and directed him to become active in Uttar Pradesh. Mulayam has propped up Sports Minister and a former lieutenant of Kanshi Ram, R.K.Chaudhary, to persuade the BSP founder’s mother and brothers to come out with their statements.
‘‘Mayawati has usurped the Dalit mission of Kanshi Ramji and turned the BSP into a party of the moneyed who have nothing to do with travails of Dalits living in poverty. She has engineered a slow death for the BSP mentor and we will not let her succeed,’’ said Chaudhary who led a march to the Governor’s house last month to get ‘‘Kanshi Ram released from Mayawati’s clutches.’’
Alarmed over the serial attack on her vote bank, Mayawati has sent directives to her cadre to induct more and more Dalits into the BSP. She has also instructed the party office-bearers in districts to sent her monthly reports to her so that she could guide them.
