Ahmedabad to get 10 ‘Made in India’ Metro trains: Govt

Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on Saturday inaugurated the first indigenously manufactured ‘Made in India’ Metro Train at the manufacturing plant of Titagarh Rail Systems near Kolkata, West Bengal. Patel said this is an important step, which “gives impetus to ‘Make in India’ and ‘Aatmanibhar India’.”

A statement issued by the government on Saturday said, “This Metro train to be delivered to Ahmedabad will meet the growing demand of the Metro rail system in the city, and will make public transport systems smoother. Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Limited (GMRCL) has placed an order for 10 trains with Kolkata-based Titagarh Rail Systems Limited. This train will meet the need for additional trains that will arise after the completion of 21 km of Phase-2 and the remaining part will be operational soon.”

At present, Ahmedabad Metro serves more than 1.6 lakh passengers daily and is growing at 30-40 per cent annually. In the coming days, the Metro rail service will be extended to Surat as well, said Bhupendra Patel in a post on social media post X.

The first ‘Made in India’ Metro train is slated to be delivered to Ahmedabad in a few days after final tests and certification. The remaining nine trains will also be delivered in phases in the next 5–6 months.

The statement added, “The Metro train has the best-in-class fire safety and other safety features and is capable of operating as a fully automated, driverless train under Grade of Automation 4 (GOA4).”

Dr Hasmukh Adhia, Principal Advisor to the Chief Minister, Advisor to the Chief Minister and Managing Director of Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Limited S S Rathore, Managing Director of Titagarh Rail Systems Umesh Chaudhary were also present.

Titagarh Rail Systems is involved in the production of Next Generation Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains and Metro Trains for several cities such as Pune, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Surat and Ahmedabad, said the statement.
