Martinez upset

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, April 1: Conchita Martinez has failed to reach the Family Circle Cup quarterfinals for the first time in seven tries, falling to unseeded Magdalena Grzbowska 7-5, 6-2 in a second-round match at Sea Pines Racquet Club.

The eighth-seeded Martinez, the Family Circle champion in 1994 and 1995, reached the semifinals the past two years. In other matches, No 14 Patty Schnyder defeated qualifier Amelie Mauresmo 6-3, 7-6 7-2 and No 16 Natasha Zvereva eliminated Gala Leon Garcia 6-4, 7-5.
