ROOPNAGAR, May 25: The police have arrested a resident of Mainpur village for filing a false complaint about his son8217;s murder, whereas the deceased had committed suicide after an altercation with his father.
The accused, Naseeb Singh, had earlier alleged in the FIR that his son Surmukh Singh was strangled to death by Sikandar Singh and three others on the night of May 20. Subsequently, the police registered a case of murder against Sikandar and his accomplices. In his complaint, Naseeb Singh had charged that his son was murdered out of revenge. The victim8217;s brother was married to Sikandar Singh8217;s sister, Ranjit Kaur. Since Ranjit Kaur was deserted by her husband, the police suspected Sikandar Singh of having committed the murder.
As no signs of struggle were found, the police ruled out the murder angle. Besides, Sikandar Singh was rounded up for interrogation from his village, Thona, shortly after the crime was reported at Sadar police station. Had Sikandar been involved, he would have fled instead of going back to his village, the police argued.
Doubting the credibility of Naseeb Singh8217;s statement, the police cross examined several farm workers to ascertain facts.
It was on the basis of their statements that the police veered around to the theory of suicide. Besides, some clues found from a tree near the site of the incident, pointed to the victim having committed suicide.
It has now been established that Surmukh Singh hung himself from a tree. SSP Jaskaran Singh said that Naseeb Singh had concocted the story of murder to avoid arrest for abetment of suicide by his son. The police have now booked Naseeb Singh, and his two sons Pavittar Singh and Mohan Singh, under various sections of the IPC, he said. While Naseeb and Pavittar are cooling their heels in police custody. Mohan Singh is absconding.
