
Initiating a suo-motu cognisance on the lack of basic amenities for accident victims in railway stations, Maharashtra State Human Rights Commission SHRC has directed the Central and Western railway authorities to provide ambulances at all railway stations to deal with accidents. In case of lack of such a provision the onus to call for an ambulance and assist the victim to the nearby hospital will lie on the railways.
nbsp;The SHRC has directed the General Manager of both Central and Western Railway to provide ambulances to all railway stations in order to handle emergency situations. The order reads: 8220;Both Central and Western railway will ensure ambulance service for the victims. And in absence, till such arrangements are made, the railways should provide parking space for private ambulances provided by NGOs.8221;
nbsp;The SHRC took suo-motu cognisance of the issue following a report in a local newspaper about a woman who died early this year at the Dadar station. The news report had mentioned that the station master on duty, Ashok Sankpal refused to arrange for an ambulance on the pretext that it was not the railway8217;s responsibility to do so. The victim, Anitadevi Sahu8217;s body which lay at the station for a couple of hours was later taken on a pull cart to a nearby hospital.
The Commissioner of Police, Railways, said that abiding by the recent Bombay High court order- both central and western railway authorities will make utilities like ambulances, stretchers, gloves and first-aid box available at every railway station.
nbsp;Directing the general manager of Central and Western Railway to file a compliance report within three months, chairperson of SHRC, Justice Kshitij Vyas in the order stated that, 8220;It is high time that railway authorities take cognisance of the seriousness of the issue and arrange for immediate implementation of the High Court directions8221;
