CHANDIGARH, May 19: Major changes for students of under-graduate classes in Commerce are on the anvil at the meeting of the Academic Council of Panjab University tomorrow.

Provision for internal assessment for B.Com students is also likely to be introduced; 20 per cent marks will be assigned for internal assessment and the practice of assignments will be introduced. Honours students in Commerce will be allowed specialisation in Business Economics, Business Law, Business Finance and Accounting, and Business Management.

The university is also considering introducing a correspondence course in Master of Education M.Ed for in-service teachers. The Academic Council will also consider introducing regular teaching in tabla instrumental.

The recommendation of introduction of a five-year integrated Masters course in French, German and Russian, which reportedly did not find favour with the university officials, is also slated to come up for discussion. Earlier, it had been proposed that the integrated course will begin immediately after the Plus Two level and will incorporate both graduate and post-graduate studies.

The nomenclature of Master of Personnel Management and Industrial Relations MPM amp; IR and Master in International Business MIB courses is proposed to be altered to MBA HR and MBA IB, respectively. The UGC recommendation regarding integration of the National Service Scheme NSS in the university curriculum is also on the agenda.

Two regulations regarding practical examination of Bachelor of Fine Arts BFA are proposed to be changed. Students will now have to pass practicals along with theory examinations to be eligible for promotion to the next class.

The syllabi for vocational courses in quot;soil conservation and water managementquot; and quot;agriculture servicequot; will also be finalised by the Council. Election will be held amongst principals of degree colleges for three seats in the library committee to manage day-to-day affairs of the PU library.

The Council will consider the recommendation of introducing a course in Guru Granth Acharya in the Department of Correspondence Courses. Shastri course may now be recognised as a degree course.

The minutes of the committee constituted by the V-C to look into the problems faced by students of vocational courses will also be placed before the Academic Council tomorrow.
