A two-day conclave of 500 madarsa teachers, community leaders and Muslim scholars from across the country began at Jamia Hamdard to dispel the notion that 8216;8216;madarsas are breeding ground for terrorism8217;8217; and to draw an action plan to project the 8216;8216;humane messages8217;8217; such institutions teach.
Inaugurating the conclave, HRD Minister Arjun Singh said people wrongly associated terrorism with madarsas. He added that disruptive elements were there in all religions and societies and it was unfair to make sweeping generalisations about a particular community.
The conclave, which started with the passing of a resolution condemning the Mumbai blasts, is backed by influential Muslim organisations, such as, All-India Milli Council, All-India Muslim Personal Law Board, All-India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat and Darul Uloom Deoband among others.
8216;8216;There is a misconception about the madarsas that they do not teach human values. They are also always being clubbed with terrorism. These notions have to be corrected8217;8217;, Maulana Abdul Wahab Filji, convener of the conclave, said. He added that one of the objectives of the conclave was to make people realise that some 8216;8216;great men of India8217;8217; were the products of madarsas.
Ibrahim Punathil, an office-bearer of the Council for Islamic Education Research, Kerala, said madarsas should minimise the time spent on religious education to draw students from all communities.8217;8217;
