TOKYO, April 15: Tournament favourite Patrick Rafter was the biggest casualty in the Japan Open tennis today crashing to a shock straight sets defeat. The top-seeded Australian was subjected to an array of aces and lightning service-return winners by 181st-ranked American Brian MaCphie before losing 3-6 6-7 (4-7).

Second-seeded Michael Chang showed no ill-effects from his knee injury as he raced to a 6-4 6-1 victory over John van Lottum of The Netherlands.

Fourth seed Thomas Johansson of Sweden, fifth seed Vincent Spadea of the United States, eighth seed Kenneth Carlsen of Denmark and 15th seed Arnaud Clement of France joined Rafter on the demise list.

In the women’s first round, fourth seed Amy Frazier breezed past Choi Young-Ja of Korea 6-4 6-2 while Fifth seed Corina Morariu (us) defeated Korean Park Sung-Hee 6-4 6-2.
