The Sri Lankan government has claimed that LTTE maintain bank accounts in Malaysia and Singapore in order to buy arms from Southeast Asian nations including Cambodia and Thailand.

The funds are collected from Sri Lanka8217;s Tamilian diaspora in North American and EU nations, on which the LTTE relies heavily, Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Mangala Pinsiri Samaraweera told the New Straits Times.

Most of the arms procurement for the rebel group took place in Southeast Asia, especially in Cambodia and in Thailand, he said. While the LTTE might be having bank accounts in countries like Malaysia, the outfit could also be investing in businesses elsewhere for funding its activities in Sri Lanka, he said.

8216;8216;The LTTE is into shipping activities in some parts of the world, and this could be areas in which money raised from the Tamil diaspora may be channelled,8217;8217; said Samaraweera, who is also the Minister of Ports and Aviation.

Samaraweera said he had informed his Malaysian counterpart, Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar, of the matter and was seeking help to find how the rebels moved money into the country.
