I wonder whether love as an emotion exists today. Of course the word is bandied about in the various forms of relationships but I wonder whether the thrill of the experience is still there, whether the tree in green leaf finds resonance in a heart beating with love. There was a time when love meant moonlight and roses, candle-light dinners and a simple walk along the beach or river with a very hesitant holding of hands. It meant a certain reserve, a certain tongue-tiedness and a delicious confusion in the other8217;s presence.
It meant always being tremulous with tears, as well as having laughter in your voice. It meant a heightened awareness of everything around, the seasons in flower, or falling leaf or bleak branches, as they turn one into another. It was about looking at the whole world with a generosity of spirit. Such was the magical power of love that bound one individual to another. Love was commitment, not confinement.

Cut to today. Conservative moorings have relaxed their hold, with more freedom for self-expression, values are for the here and now. Fourteen-year-olds moon around if they don8217;t have a date and parents are worried stiff if their children are not dating. The bars are overflowing with youngsters enjoying life, and yet there is nothing remotely subtle in these encounters, that they are enveloped in that magical aura of love. Love is commerce with brisk business. The wide-eyed innocence has been replaced by a more practical approach. Partners are changed at the drop of a hat, relationships are extended indefinitely due to commitment phobia, and the punishing work schedules leave little room for romance.
Social boundaries existed in the good old days in romantic relationships that made them all the more attractive. Today8217;s love 8212; all cut and dried, divested of that mystic quality 8212; has lost its zing.
