Ill-ordained
8226; The UPA government contemplating framing of an ordinance to spare several powerful MPs Sonia Gandhi, Somnath Chatterjee, Karan Singh, T. Subbirami Reddy, Amar Singh, et al, the ignominy of getting the boot under the Parliament Prevention of Disqualification Act 1959, by amending the Section 3 of the said Act is, to say the least, a shameless attempt by our representatives to hang on to power. This practice of framing ordinances by state governments, and now the Central government, to wriggle out of a sticky situation is deplorable. I think the chief justice and president of India should intervene to ensure that the ordinance option is not loosely resorted to, to tide over illegalities 8212; be it the Maharashtra government8217;s ordinance on unauthorised buildings in Ulhasnagar or the latest one at the Centre.

Midnight fiat
8226; With every passing day in power Sonia8217;s UPA government is digging its grave. Kudos to the Indian Express 8216;To stop office-of-profit axe8230;8217;, March 22 for exposing the UPA8217;s, nay, Sonia Gandhi8217;s intention to shield MPs holding offices of profit by means of an extremely hurried ordinance. Sonia is doing nothing new. Her mother-in-law, Indira Gandhi, was wont to rule helpless Indians by means of midnight ordinances. Her late husband, Rajiv Gandhi, changed the Constitution after the SC8217;s verdict in the Shah Bano8217;s case. Your newspaper has always given utmost importance to truth involving us all. It valiantly fought the black days of the Emergency imposed by Indira Gandhi.

But we censor
8226; Mahesh Bhatt in expressing his views on the issue of censorship vis-a-vis creativity in films wants censorship to be scrapped so that creativity can flourish unhindered. He always takes extreme positions, from where it is difficult for him to contribute anything useful to a debate, often continuing to repeat his primary argument as a stuck tape without realising that people have not accepted it. We have a film censor board even to this day, because the government thinks that the film fraternity led by the likes of Mahesh Bhatt will take their work to such extremes of irrationality, sex and sleaze. If the film fraternity had been more responsible, there would possibly be no censor board by now.

Milkman goes
8226; Verghese Kurien for five decades successfully fought off multinational onslaughts and political pressure to make Amul 8220;the taste of India8221;. He united diary farmers of Anand and went on to pioneer the 8216;White Revolution8217; in the country. His exit marks the end of an era in the co-operative movement in India. Sadly, the manner in which his exit was effected could not befit his sterling service.

8226; Sad that a person of Verghese Kurien8217;s stature. who served the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation for over three decades as pointed out in your editorial 8216;For butter or worse8217; IE, March 22, should have lost out to bureaucrats who are now out to eat the butter. His decision to quit from the post only indicated the bad health of the GCMMF.
