After Bangladesh rejected the India8217;s proposal to re-open traditional trade routes and haats along the border in the Northeast, the Union Home Ministry has proposed free trade between the two countries under strict vigil.
Meghalaya Commissioner and Secretary L Roy said the Union Home Ministry has already submitted a proposal to the Bangladesh Government and is waiting for its approval. He revealed that the new blue print proposes identity cards for those who want to carry out trade across the border here.
Meghalaya has been pressing for the re-opening of the border haats. The West Khasi Hills Coordination Committee WKHCC recently met Chief Minister D D Lapang to complain that the trade in the border villages suffer because of the lack of good roads between West Khasi Hills villages and Shillong. WKHCC leader Y G Lyngdoh told reporters that the Government failure to construct good road has led the farmers to illegally sell their produce at markets in Bangladesh.
The WKHCC has also demanded that the state Government immediately repair the NH 44 E.
