Australia8217;s bowling attack received a big boost ahead of the crucial third cricket Test against India with speedster Brett Lee making a comeback to the squad after an injury lay-off.
Lee, who missed the first two Tests at Brisbane and Adelaide due to an abdominal injury, replaces injured Jason Gillespie in the 12-member squad.
The tearaway fast bowler proved his fitness by picking up five wickets in a Pura Cup match this weekend.
The rest of the 12-member squad remained unchanged, as contrary to speculation, the selectors decided against trying a raw paceman to rein in the Indians who recorded a historic win in the Adelaide Test for a 1-0 lead in the four-match series.
Chairman of selectors Trevor Hohns said Lee had proved his fitness in two domestic games. 8216;8216;Brett is an established Test player and has demonstrated that he is back to full fitness following injury,8217;8217; said Hohns. 8216;8216;Brett always adds some zest to the attack and will be supported by our other bowlers who we felt, despite the loss, served the side well in Adelaide,8221; he said.
Matthew Nicholson, who impressed immensely in the drawn match between Australia A and India, missed out on a berth as rookie left-arm speedster Nathan Bracken, the 12th man in the Adelaide Test, was retained in the squad.
Meanwhile, Michael Clarke, despite his ton against the tourists, too failed to make it to the overcrowded Aussie middle-order. But it is generally felt that he stays at the front of the Australian selectors8217; minds as Steve Waugh8217;s replacement.
During the tour game Clarke scored over another leading contender for the Test batting berth, Martin Love. Clarke8217;s sparkling ton came in the second innings after Love had top-scored with 94 in the first.
Squad: Steve Waugh captain, Ricky Ponting, Andy Bichel, Adam Gilchrist, Matthew Hayden, Simon Katich, Justin Langer, Brett Lee, Stuart MacGill, Damien Martyn, Brad Williams, Nathan Bracken.
