August 17: The Bombay High Court has directed the chief Maharashtra hyrogropher to survey 700 acres of central government land at Kanjur village in Thane district whose lease to a private party was sought to be withdrawn on the ground that it was needed for public amenities.

The direction was issued on Wednesday by Justice A P Shahand and Justice V C Dagga, who heard a petition filed by Bombay Salt and Chemical Works Ltd, which had leased the land from the central government several years ago to manufacture salt.

Senior counsel for the Union government, Jyoti Pawar, argued that the land was required for civic amenities and there was no alternative land available for this purpose. Since the lease had expired, the government was within its right to seek its possession.

The state hydrographer has been directed to ascertain whether the impugned land was inundated during high tide and to submit a tentative report to the court by September 4.

He has also been directed to consider the Coastal Zone Management plan map drawn up by the chief hydrographer of the central government and the Housing and Urban Development Corporation (HUDCO).
