It was a day of highs and lows for India’s 16-year-old International Master Deepan Chakravarthy at the Commonwealth Chess Championship here on Monday. The Chennai boy was so upset with his third round loss to Vietnamese GM Nguyen Ahn Dung that he requested the media to leave him alone. Even a reference of his upset win over Bangladesh GM Zia-ur-Rehman in the earlier round failed to cheer this youngster.

The other hero of the day, RR Laxman, first dashed Indian GM Praveen Thipsay’s hopes and then was lucky to escape with a draw against Uzbekistan GM Dzhumaev Marat. India’s wonder girl Koneru Humpy also had a taste of defeat against veteran IM Ravi Hegde in the third round. Humpy was earlier held to a draw by Bangladesh’s Kh Aminul Islam . Uzbeki GM top seed Kasimdzhanov Rustom and second sedded GM Krishnan Sasikiran (both 3 pts), along with four others were jointly leading after the third round.
