On no earlier occasion has Chandigarh’s Tagore Theatre been so crowded as it was last week. The reason: Lara Dutta, Miss India Universe 2000, was in town to award diplomas to the students of National Institute of Fashion Designing (NIFD). From managing photographers on stage to ensuring a safe exit for the beauty queen, everything was a bit difficult. In fact, Lara found it tough even to walk a step on the stage. Surrounded as she was by photographers, no one in the audience could see her. No wonder parents of NIFD students stood up in their seats and kept shouting at them until they were forced to clear the stage.

But Lara struck an instant rapport with the crowd when she declared: “The relationship between a model and a designer is a marriage of sorts. It has to be complementary. Without each other both are incomplete.” She later surprised the city by going shopping. While the initial ten minutes were easy as no one identified her, the latter part was tough with Lara running for her car.
