KSB meet to chalk out steps for ex-armymen146;s welfare

A high-level meeting of the Kendriya Sainik Board, the apex agency looking into the interests of armed forces ex-servicemen, will be held tomorrow to debate new welfare measures to improve resettlement. This will be the first KSB meeting since the government set up the Department of Ex-servicemen Welfare at the Defence Ministry last year.

Participants at the meeting, to be chaired by Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee, will include the Governor of Goa, CMs of Haryana, Jharkhand, Delhi, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim and the Lieutenant Governors of Andaman and Nicobar, and Chandigarh.

A Defence Ministry spokesperson said the meeting would look at 8216;8216;strengthening the institutions of Rajya Sainik Boards and Zila Sainik Boards, increasing employment avenues of ex-servicemen in state governments and extending various welfare and development programmes.8221;

The agenda includes discussions on the employment of special ex-servicemen battalions for the police in states facing 8216;8216;extremist problems8217;8217; like Bihar and Jharkhand and a reservation for jobs for ex-servicemen in state government departments, for which a relaxation in education requirements, domicile status and physical efficiency standards will also be proposed.

The meeting will also propose the employment of only ex-servicemen at Rajya and Zila sainik boards, with only retired armed forces officers of the rank of Brigadier or Colonel allowed to serve as director of RSBs, and the employment of widows or retired ex-service lady officers for better interaction with widows.
