PUNE, Sept 30: A 35-year-old woman landless labourer was done to death by a rich farmer from Sansar village near Walchandnagar allegedly because she had refused to have illicit relationship with him.

Laxmi Abhangrao was murdered on July 27, according to sub-inspector N H Shaikh from Walchandnagar police station.

Laxmi8217;s husband Kisan had found her body about a fortnight after that. He allegedly buried the body instead of reporting the incident to the police fearing the wrath of the suspected killer Bapu Kalu Sapkal, the police said.

The incident came to light yesterday evening when Shaikh quizzed Kisan about the whereabouts of his wife on the basis of a tip off that she had been done to death. Sapkal was arrested on Thursday morning after Kisan lodged a formal first information report FIR accusing him of murdering Laxmi.

Police said the Abhangraos used to work for Sapkal, who owns a four-acre land at Sapkalwadi hamlet near Sansar, as well as some other farmers. Kisan had alleged in his FIR that Sapkal was harassing Laxmi for the quite some time over the demand that she should have illicit relationship with him.

The FIR said Laxmi, who was suffering from fever, left her residence on July 27 morning for the public health centre at Sansar and did not return. Kisan claimed in the FIR that he did not report the incident to the police since he assumed that she had run away.
