MUMBAI, May 16: The strong team of Khandelwal Tubes emerged the top of the eight qualifiers in the All-India Bridge tournament, organised by the Western Railway Sports Association at the Railway Officer8217;s Club, here, today.

After ten rounds of the Swiss League, Khandelwal Tubes, comprising R Khandelwal, JM Shah, Jitu Solani, Anil Padhye, Kalpana Misra and N Rajmohan finished with 172 VPs, just one ahead of the second-placed Indian Railways A.Indian Railways A, from West Bengal, were way behind after the first day8217;s proceedings, where their second string was among the top, but strong whoing in the last five rounds saw them surge ahead. In the last round Railways A beat Puria 20-8, Puria, who were leading the field after nine rounds with 157 VPs, were pushed to the sixth spot.

Also making the grade narrowly was Sunil Macchar, who managed to grab the eighth slot with 161 VPs. Before the last round Macchar8217;s were in 11th spot, but they scored 17 and scraped through. First day leaders Tolani, winners of theSummer Nationals, finished in fifth place with 165. The quarter-finals will be played over two sets of 14 boards and is a knock-out. The first prize is Rs one lakh.
