Keep up pressure

• Dr Manmohan Singh has promised in Parliam...

.

Dr Manmohan Singh has promised in Parliament that the government would reopen cases against those named in the Nanavati report (IE, August 12). Although the PM seemed honest, Congress credibility is on the line. The media must pursue this case vigorously until the government takes action against all those indicted by the Nanavati report. In this, The Indian Express should take the lead as it did some time ago in the Satyendra Dubey murder case in Bihar.

Anti Modi-ism

This refers to reports about calls for Narendra Modi’s resignation after the resignation of Jagdish Tytler. Which report has indicted Modi for the Godhra riots? A section of the media is always anti-national, anti-Gujarat. So if anything goes wrong anywhere, it blames Modi. It’s the fashion.

Proven incompetence

This refers to ‘Don’t ask for a midnight dance in Bangalore’ (IE, August 12). It is bizarre, the steps taken by the chief minister. During his tenure, no new roads have been laid, work on fly-overs on the airport road is stuck. And the CM is busy deciding whether we can dance or not.

Don’t forget

True, people must move on — but the memory of 1984 must be kept alive, and that of Gujarat 2002, and that of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, precisely to prevent a recurrence of similar inhumanity (‘The unbearable burden of memory’, IE, August 13). This is at the collective level. For the individual, memories of such brutality and suffering never die.

From the heart

Apropos of ‘A great national shame, a great national tragedy’ (IE, August 13), Manmohan Singh has risen above politics and the message has really come from his heart.

SC’s overreach

The Supreme Court judgement is very unfortunate (‘SC frees private colleges’, IE, August 13). It is an example of misguided judicial activism. The courts cannot and should not frame the policies as they are not the law-makers. The Supreme court has ignored the very spirit of the Constitution which assures social justice and equality in opportunity. Now it is time for a central legislation which will enable universities and state governments to assert control on the so-called self-financing institutions. This law should ensure the rights of Dalits and Adivasis.

Dump them too!

Congratulations to all Kozhikodians for performing what seems an impossible task in India (‘From today, India gets first litter-free city: Kozhikode’, IE, August 11). I hope your example is emulated by the rest of the country. And one more request. Is it possible for you to dump all the politicians in tamper proof garbage cans and ship them to some remote part of the world or outer space from where they can never return to India?
