
The BJP Government on Thursday decided to withdraw its two-day-old order directing all temples under the purview of the Muzrai Department to perform pujas in the name of Karnataka8217;s new Chief Minister.
Following a Cabinet meeting on Thursday, Home Minister V S Acharya announced that a decision had been taken to withdraw the June 9 circular of the Religious and Charitable Endowments Department asking for prayers in the name of Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa. 8220;Since the CM already has the blessing of the five crore people of Karnataka, a decision has been taken to withdraw the circular,8221; Acharya said.
The June 9 circular, made public by Muzrai Department Minister Krishnaiah Setty on June 11, without naming Yeddyurappa, stated pujas must be performed in the names of the CM and his Government everyday. The circular, issued by the Muzrai Commissioner, said: 8220;It is directed by the Muzrai Minister that for overall development of the state and for welfare of the people, to maintain peace and tranquillity, all the Muzrai temples in the state should perform 8216;archana8217; in the name of the Chief Minister and Government.8221; Nearly 30,000 temples come under the purview of the department.
BJP leaders said the circular was not being withdrawn because it had embarrassed the new Government. Similar circulars had been issued during the tenure of the Congress and JDS governments specifically mentioning the names of the CMs, BJP leaders said.
