Even for Oliver Kahn, the 1.25 lakh screaming spectators might turn out to be a whole new challenge.
The legendary German goalkeeper will step into football-crazy Kolkata8217;s Yuba Bharati Krirangan when FC Bayern Munich take on Mohun Bagan in their Asian tour exhibition tie on May 27. The match will be Kahn8217;s send-off in all forms of soccer.
Announcing the much-anticipated fixture here in the city today, Bayern8217;s director of international affairs, Martin Haegle, conveyed Kahn8217;s excitement at the prospect. 8220;I am feeling thrilled to know that I will play my last match at a stadium that will be a full house, with 1,25,000 spectators,8221; Kahn said in a video played out by Haegle.
Haegle, who had visited the city with Bayern8217;s junior outfit in 2005 to participate in the IFA Shield, also showed another video interview of Bayern8217;s director, the legendary former Karl-Heinz Rummenigge wishing the German club a successful tour of Asia. Rummenigge hoped Bayern8217;s participation in the three Asian tour matches will bring about renewed enthusiasm among soccer lovers across Asia.
Bayern8217;s Asian tour comprises matches in three cities 8212; Jakarta, Guangzhou and Kolkata.
Interestingly, the Bengal Peerless group, responsible for arranging the Kolkata visit, is looking to make the most of the Indo-German relationship initiative, hoping to give the sport a shot in the arm.
Asked about the availability of the players for Kahn8217;s last match, Haegle said: 8220;All the top players, including five Latin American players, will be seen here on May 27.
8220;Again, we must have some surprise for the spectators on the special day,8221; he smiled.
Kahn8217;s successor under the bars, Michael Rensing, might also be in action in the match.
