In an unprecedented move, the authorities of Jadavpur University suspended 24 students and decided to lodge an FIR against six former students on Tuesday for ragging a first-year girl student.
On July 16, the student of the architecture department was allegedly ragged by her seniors. The next day, her father lodged a written complaint to the Registrar of the University, followed by the constitution of a five-member anti-ragging committee comprising the faculties of different departments of the university and the Dean of students.
Based on the report submitted by the committee in the mid-week of August, the decision was taken at Tuesday8217;s Executive Council meeting.
As per the council8217;s decision, three students found directly involved with the ragging have been suspended for four semesters, which is equivalent to two years. Of them, two are girls.
Another 21 students who were present at the site of the incident will be suspended for their 8220;passive8221; involvement. The university will lodge an FIR against six former students who have already graduated from the university but were involved in the incident. A copy of the FIR will be forwarded to their respective employers. All those found guilty were students of second, third, fourth and fifth years of the same department.
This is the first time ever that Jadavpur University has imposed an academic suspension. In the previous cases, students found guilty of ragging were debarred from staying in the hostels. The Executive Council members were unanimous in their decision on the issue.
8220;The gravity of the incident forced us to take a strict decision. The students will be given a chance to come up with their defence and explain why such an action will not be taken against them,8221; said Pradip Narayan Ghosh, Vice-Chancellor of Jadavpur University.
