SURAT, July 29: Fantastic as it may seem, it appears that the boys who met a watery grave in the Kansanagar lake of Katargam, Surat, on Wednesday, left behind a note that said, 8220;We are going into the lake at our own risk, and only we are responsible for any eventuality.8221; It listed the names of the 11 boys, who were together all afternoon.
The handwriting is that of Prashant Bhalchandra Kadam alias Pallav, one of the six who never returned from the fatal dip, and tallies perfectly with other samples of his handwriting.
8220;It is established that there was no one who could have insisted they write that note8221;, said investigating officer ASI M R Patel of the Katargam police station on Thursday. 8220;It8217;s just something that cannot be explained.8221; Deputy Commissioner of Police North Zone K K Ojha agreed: 8220;This is a unique case.8221;
The note is currently in the custody of the Katargam police, who retrieved it from one of Prashant8217;s exercise books.
Based on the interrogation of the three original survivors of the escapade, the police has reconstructed the sequence of events. According to the boys, in the first week of June 8212; when the monsoon had not set in 8212; they had bathed in the lake, which was two to three feet deep them. On Wednesday, they returned, only to see the danger8217; board put up by the Surat Municipal Corporation.
8220;In a bid to ridicule the warning and make fun of the whole system, the boys pulled out a notebook and wrote the note before going in8221;, said Patel. While four boys just had a wash and came out, the others went right in. Just one 8212; Shakti Raj Murali 8212; managed to come out.
Dismissing suggestions that the note might have been a 8220;built-up story8221; to save the necks of certain officials, Patel said, 8220;It sounds incredible, but that is exactly what happened.8221;
