Terry Jenner, mentor of Shane Warne, has cautioned against rushing his young understudy Cullen Bailey to step into the legend8217;s shoes.
Jenner said the 22-year-old Bailey, named by Cricket Australia in its list of 25 contracted players, had all the traits to be successful at international level in years to come but needed more time to refine his game. 8220;I think it would be devastating for a young player to follow Warne straight in, and the reputation and aura and records that come with that,8221; he said.
8220;Stuey MacGill has a very important job now. I do believe that Bailey has the ability and the work ethic to be a successful Test bowler, but he needs to be given a chance to develop,8221; he was quoted as saying by the Sydney Morning Herald. Chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch has said 8220;every player on the list has a chance of playing international cricket in the next 12 months8221;.
8220;He Bailey has put together a couple of solid seasons now. Sometimes these things happen quickly,8221; Hilditch had said.
Jenner described Bailey as a bowler with an action similar to that of former Australian skipper Richie Benaud8217;s.
However, he claimed the youngster was analytical in his approach and with strong religious beliefs that enhance his focus and work ethic.
Bailey, one of four wrist-spinners alongside the more seasoned, has only a modest first-class record with 54 wickets at 41.51 in 17 matches.
