
NAGPUR, OCT 8: Notorious criminal and Janata Dal S candidate for Nagpur East Assembly constituency Anil Dhawade, who was on the run for two weeks, surrendered before the Police Commissioner O P Bali yesterday, knowing that he has been defeated.
Dhawade has been detained under the Maharashtra Prevention of Dangerous Activities of slumlords, bootleggers, drug offenders and dangerous persons act MPDA. Police sources said Dhawade, who is a corporator, told the Police Chief that he chose to go underground thinking that if he was elected to the Assembly, the order for his preventive detention would not be implemented.
Earlier, Bali had issued an order for his detention onS eptember 24 for involment in serious criminal offences but he managed to escape having been alerted by an officer who has since been suspended.
Dhawade the younger brother of 8220;satta king8221; Harishchandra Dhawade, secured 2,3041 votes and was placed third. Satish Chaturvedi of the Congress was re-elected from the constituency.
Anil Dhawade was a 8220;Minister8221;in charge of slum improvement, sports and culture during the short-lived system of mayor-in-council in Nagpur Corporation. The four-member Janata Dal group led by him in the Corporation had alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party.
