VADODARA, SEPT 7: Sunday8217;s poll violence in the Jhagadia taluka of neighbouring Bharuch district, which saw four people suffer stab injuries, involved a gang of Janata Dal United workers, led by Mahesh Vasava, son of State Janata Dal president Chhotubhai Vasava, the police told The Indian Express on Monday.

District Superintendent of Police C R Parmar said Mahesh was a notorious criminal and wanted in at least two murder cases, apart from several criminal cases. 8220;He was accompanied by Ashwin Chaudhary, also a wanted criminal,8221; Parmar said, adding that the clash, which occurred around 5 pm, did not affect the polling.

Both the main accused, and a dozen others, are absconding.

The DSP said four Congress workers 8212; Jaunpur residents Jalsinh Bansraj, Rai Sarab and Jhagadia residents Naresh Vasava and Harshad Vasava 8212; sustained minor injuries when the accused attacked them with swords and knives. According to the injured, Dal workers forbid them to come to that locality as they were 8220;outsiders8221;.

In other incidents, Parmar said, Jambusar resident Rushi Shah, a Congress worker, was beaten up by a gang of BJP workers led by a relative of local MLA Chhatarsinh Mori. 8220;However, though Shah complained his gold chain and watch had been snatched by the BJP workers, no injuries or bruises were recorded in his medical report.

8220;A case has been registered under Section 392 of the IPC on the complaint, while the Jhagadia case attracted the provisions of Section 324 of the IPC. Both are being investigated,8221; Parmar said, adding, however, that no arrests had been made.

Meanwhile, District Collector B B Swain said the final turnout for the polls had been put at 53.4 per cent, against the 49 per cent reported on Sunday. The tally from the remote booths had pushed up the figure, he explained.
