
A day after the Supreme Court granted conditional permission to the Tamil Nadu Government for holding Jallikattu, the traditional bull-fight sport began on Wednesday at Palamedu here under tight security and direct supervision of top police and district officials.
District Collector S S Jawahar and Superintendent of Police P Anbhu were present at the venue in accordance with the conditions laid by the apex court on Tuesday while granting permission for the event, three days after it banned the sport.
Animal Welfare Board officials were also were present at the venue.
As many as 500 bulls and 350 men are participating in the event. All the bulls were subjected to a medical test by qualified veterinary surgeons prior to the event. Participants of Jallikattu were also asked to undergo a medical test.
They were also frisked to ensure that they were not carrying sharp weapons. Each bull and participant was given an ID card and barricades were erected to prevent spectators from mixing with the participants, officials said. The bulls, especially reared for the event, were brought from Madurai, Theni, Dindigul, Sivagangai, Virdhunagar and Ramanathapuram. Jallikattu is organised on Pongal, the harvest festival of the state.
