Janmashtami celebrations took an ugly turn here on Monday when the police lathicharged a group of Iskcon devotees for violating curfew restrictions. Over a dozen women and children, who were taking part in a procession, were injured in the incident.
The police had earlier refused permission for the procession on account of the recent communal tension in the city as also because five police station areas are still under curfew.
Every year, Iskcon followers bring out a huge procession on the occasion of Janmashtami which travels across the city.
8220;They did not have permission. Despite that they took out a procession and refused to call it off, forcing us to use mild force,8221; said District Magistrate Ashish Goel .
8220;There should have been no objection from the administration as we had already given the undertaking that our procession would not pass through the curfew-bound areas. We will take up the issue with the National Human Rights Commission NHRC,8221; said Rajin Malhotra, a devotee.
